During the administration of Donald Trump, Haley served as ambassador to the United Nations. She is now vying with former President Trump for the Republican nomination in the 2024 presidential election.
Nikki Haley does not support US withdrawal from the UN
In an interview, Republican presidential candidate Haley was asked if she agreed with the assertion that the UN was “historically anti-American and anti-Semitic.” Fox News host Sean Hannity asked her about it.
“That’s a true statement,” Haley responded.
Sean Hannity wondered if, if she became president, the United States would “exit” the UN.
Nikki Haley said: “The only thing is we would defund the UN as much as possible. The only reason, Sean, you are not leaving the UN is that we are one in five countries that have a veto.
Haley said that while she supports “taking as much money out of the United Nations as possible,” the organization does not support the U.S. withdrawal. Haley served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations during part of former President Donald Trump’s tenure in the White House.
Haley told Sean Hannity on Fox News Channel that the United States is one of five countries with veto power, which is why it remains at the UN.
She added: “And the number of things that we were able to stop China and Russia and Iran from doing with this veto is significant, and so you prevent bad things from happening. But we don’t have to pay as much as we do, and we don’t have to be part of one of these other organizations.
In the EU Security Council, the US, UK, China, France and Russia all have veto power.
Additionally, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, has come out in favor of reducing payments to the UN.
DeSantis, in an article, wrote: “The fact that Joe Biden does not have the moral conscience to ask his UN ambassador to veto this nonsense that does not even condemn Hamas while it dinner with Xi in San Francisco shows you who he’s looking for. to appease. This ends in my admin.
We will unequivocally support Israel, take names, make it clear that countries hostile to Israel are risking their relations with us, and defund the UN.
American taxpayer dollars should no longer support this corrupt and morally bankrupt hotbed of anti-Semitism that empowers our enemies and coddles dictators and the worst violators of human rights.
Bryan Gryphon, DeSantis’ press secretary, retweeted the politician’s message and wrote: “Ron DeSantis will defund the UN.”
This week, Haley sparked controversy by stating that “every social media user should be name-checked.” According to her, individuals would be more civil because they would know that their name appeared on their messages and Russian, Chinese and Iranian bots would be eliminated.
Later, in an interview with CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” Haley said she supported American free speech but not that of Russia or Hamas. “We need our social media to verify everyone,” the woman said.
She said that while she supported Americans’ right to unrestricted free speech, she did not support the same rights for Chinese, Iranians or Russians.
Haley campaign spokeswoman Olivia Perez-Cubas told the Associated Press: “What Nikki does not support is allowing the Chinese and Iranians to create anonymous accounts to sow chaos and anti-American filth among our people. »
She added: “Social media companies need to police this better. »
While Trump maintains a double-digit advantage over his rivals, Nikki Haley has unexpectedly risen to second place in several recent polls. The candidates are competing to succeed the former president, but it remains a great feat to achieve.
