India tested its emergency alert system today (October 20, 2023) by sending a test alert to several smartphones. The crowd heard a loud siren with an ’emergency alert’ on their phones.
The alert stated: “This is a SAMPLE TEST MESSAGE sent over the Mobile Broadcasting System by the Ministry of Telecommunications, Government of India. Ignore this message as no action is required on your part. This message has been sent to test the Pan-India Emergency Alert System being implemented by the National Disaster Management Authority. It aims to increase public safety and provide timely warnings during emergencies. Timestamp: 2023-10-20 11:27 AM 11”.
People from different regions receive this warning message at different times and dates. I received the alert message on my phone on October 20, 2023 at 11:27 am. The main purpose of this warning system is to make people aware and prepared for sudden natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, floods and more.
