On October 3, 2023, the United States House of Representatives voted to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R) as Speaker.

A fierce competition for a permanent replacement was sparked by the historic removal of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from the speakership.

After two weeks of disagreements and chaos, they chose to nominate Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) as speaker pro tempore until the House chose Mike Johnson (R) as speaker.

The Republican-controlled House may need to pass another short-term funding bill to keep the government running as the deadline for the previous continuing resolution approaches, according to the new House leader.

On Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said, “Our first priority is to get government funding,” he said. added, “Our team is ready and working like a well-oiled machine.”

Other Newsmax reporting revealed that Johnson said an energy and water credits measure passed last week, a day after he took the gavel.

He further stated that “we are moving as quickly as possible and trying to meet the deadline” of November 17, the expiration date of the current funding bill.

House Republicans are focused on cutting spending because they are “haunted by the federal debt, $33.6 trillion…we always have to keep that in mind.”

In addition to cutting spending and increasing accountability, they also seek to diminish “the woke and armed federal government.”

He said: “All of that goes into the debate equation, whatever the main number is. ” he continued: “We worked hard to achieve this, and you will see it happen in the coming days. »

The President indicated his preference for a Jan. 15 deadline when asked how long he would support a temporary funding gap.

He said, “A lot of times the Senate tries to shut down the House and come up with an omnibus bill,” while continuing, “We don’t do that. We have single-subject bills and our separate appropriations bill. I think pushing this back until January would help us in our approach.

Asked about the future of the rule that allows a House Republican to take the speaker’s chair, which was used to remove McCarthy (R-Calif.) as speaker, Johnson replied: “Everyone told me the rule needs to change. »

He told Fox News: “I’m not afraid of it because I’m going to work openly [on] transparency with every member, and everyone will fully understand what we do and why this is a big part of it,”

Johnson said, “We’ll have some discussions about it, but it’s not my top priority” because the rule makes it “difficult for any speaker” to do their job.

He added: “I said in my speech when I took the oath [I want] decentralize power. I want to empower our Speaker, the relevant committees and all the talented people in the House, make them more involved in major decisions and situations in the process and ensure regular order. If we do this, we won’t have to worry about a motion to quash.
