Robert Andres Bonta was born in Quezon City, Philippines on September 22, 1972. American lawyer and politician Robert Andres Bonta has served as Attorney General of California since 2021.

He is a member of the Democratic Party and served as a member of the Alameda City Council from 2010 to 2012 and as a member of the 18th District of the California State Assembly from 2012 to 2021.

Bonta served as chair of the California Asian and Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus and was the first Filipino-American to hold office in the California State Legislature.

Gov. Gavin Newsom chose Bonta to become attorney general after Xavier Becerra resigned as Secretary of Health and Human Services.

On April 23, 2021, Bonta was sworn in and became the first Filipino-American to hold the position. In 2022, Bonta was chosen for a full four-year term.

In 1999, Bonta was admitted to the California State Bar. Bonta served as a law clerk to Judge Alvin W. Thompson of the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut between 1998 and 1999.

Returning to California, Rob Bonta joined the San Francisco law firm Keker & Van Nest as a litigation associate. From 1999 to 2003, Bonta was employed by Keker & Van Nest and worked in various areas, including fraud, insurance, contract law, patent infringement and civil rights.

As a private attorney, Bonta worked with the ACLU to establish new procedures to prevent the California Highway Patrol from engaging in racial profiling.

Bonta worked for Dennis Herrera as San Francisco’s deputy city attorney from 2003 to 2012. In November 2010, Bonta won a seat on the Alameda council. On December 21, 2010, he took the oath and was appointed deputy mayor. He announced his intention to run for the National Assembly within a year.

When Bonta was elected to the State Assembly in November 2012, several Alameda citizens attempted to recall him, but their initiative never made it onto the ballot.

In the 2012 California State Assembly elections, Bonta was chosen to represent the 18th district. He was re-elected in the 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2020 elections.

To replace Xavier Becerra, who resigned from the post to become Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Joe Biden, Governor Gavin Newsom said on March 24, 2021, that he would nominate Bonta to serve as California Attorney General.
