The FCC attempted to reinstate net neutrality rules to provide a uniform internet framework nationwide.
Here is the detailed news.
FCC wants to reinstate net neutrality rules
On Thursday, the US communications regulator, the Federal Communication Commission (FCC), voted to reinstate net neutrality rules.
Net neutrality states that all Internet traffic should be treated the same, regardless of its source or destination. Through rules intended to protect an open and free Internet, the FCC proposed to consider broadband Internet service an essential “telecommunications” service under Title II of the Communications Act.
The FCC said: “Under this law, without authorization, no federal agency can effectively monitor or assist with broadband outages that threaten jobs, education, health, and safety. »
The new rules also propose to prevent Internet Service Providers (ISPs) from “blocking legal content, throttling speeds and creating fast lanes that favor those who can pay for access.”
Internet service providers cannot block or prioritize specific types of traffic.
FCC Chairman Jessica Rosenworcel said: “The law requires telecommunications providers to protect the confidentiality of their customers’ proprietary information. »
“This means that these providers cannot sell your location data, among other sensitive information. These privacy protections currently extend to voice customers, but not broadband subscribers.
“Does this really make sense?” Do we want our broadband providers to sell what we do online? Remove our service for a salary thanks to new artificial intelligence models? Doing all this without our permission?
Rosenworcel added: “We know that competition is the best way to lower prices for consumers. And approaches like the Affordable Connectivity Program are the best way to ensure the service is affordable for everyone.
“We will not let broadband providers, the gatekeepers of the Internet, dictate what we can and cannot say online. And we will not undermine incentives to invest in broadband networks, which were stronger than ever when these rules were in place.”
The FCC first adopted net neutrality rules in 2015. However, they were repealed by the administration of former President Donald Trump in 2017.
In 2023, President Joe Biden’s administration supported the net neutrality rule by ordering the FCC to reinstate the Open Internet Rule to make the Internet accessible to all Americans.
FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenwrcel introduced the net neutrality proposal Thursday aimed at establishing a unified telecommunications framework nationwide.
