The Republican representative from Louisiana became the 56th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.
Here is the detailed news.
Louisiana Republican Mike Johnson elected speaker of the House of Representatives
The U.S. House of Representatives elected its new speaker and ended a weeks-long chaos over the presidency on Wednesday.
Louisiana Republican Rep. Mike Johnson was elected the 56th president in a primary vote with the support of all 220 Republicans present and voting, while all 209 Democrats present voted for the caucus leader House Democrat Hakeem Jeffries. Johnson needed 215 votes to win the office of president.
The House voted 216-210, with eight Republicans and 208 Democrats, to remove California Rep. Kevin McCarthy as House speaker earlier this month.
Later, the House GOP nominated three more high-profile figures for president, including Steve Scalise, House Majority Leader and Representative of Louisiana’s 1st Congressional District; Jim Jordan, Representative of Ohio’s 4th Congressional District; and House Majority Whip Tom Emmer.
However, none of the GOP nominations were able to gain enough Republican support to become president. As a result, Johnson was nominated Tuesday evening and won all the votes to win the position.
The newly elected president is a conservative Republican and a supporter of former President Donald Trump, who supported Trump’s 2020 election fraud theory.
Johnson opposes abortion and U.S. aid to Ukraine and supports LGBTQ regulations.
In his speech, the president-elect pledged to rebuild and restore Americans’ trust, which he said deteriorated due to the shutdown of government activities following the former president’s impeachment.
Johnson said: “In this time of great crisis, it is our duty to work together, as previous generations of great leaders have done, to meet these great challenges and solve these great problems. »
“We want our allies around the world to know that this body of legislators is once again accountable to our duty stations. Let the enemies of freedom around the world hear us loud and clear: the People’s House is back in business,” Johnson added.
The White House said US President Joe Biden called Johnson on Wednesday to congratulate him on his victory. According to the White House, Biden promised to “work in good faith with House Republicans on behalf of the American people.”
Biden said: “Even though we have real disagreements on important issues, there should be a mutual effort to find common ground wherever we can. It is time for all of us to act responsibly and put the good of the American people and the daily priorities of American families above all partisanship. »
Johnson’s election as Speaker of the House restarted the government’s work this week. Without a president, the House would not be able to pass important legislation such as Biden’s proposed Ukraine and Israel aid package to help those countries in their ongoing battles.
Nonetheless, Johnson said Wednesday that the first action under his presidency would be the adoption of a resolution to support Israel in its war against Hamas. With the election of the President, the country hopes to regain the governmental stability that it has lacked for weeks.
