DeSantis refuses to answer questions about the benefits of slavery
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) argues with a reporter during a campaign stop in Iowa Thursday on the controversial school curriculum recently adopted by his state, which says students should learn that slaves have personally “developed skills” since.
A reporter asked DeSantis if he believed slavery had any beneficial aspects. DeSantis declined to respond, instead saying the program was misinterpreted. He also accused Vice President Kamala Harris of spreading a ‘hoax’ about the program.
“The program does not say so. The program is very clear,” DeSantis said, chastising the reporter for omitting the larger context of the 200-page report.
vice-president Kamala Harris criticized the program last week, which said it showed Florida was “preaching” to children.
“They dare to preach to our children,” Harris said last week. “Adults know what slavery entails. Rape was involved in this. This included torture. This included taking a child from its mother.
He added: “It contains some of the worst examples of human dehumanization in our world. “So in this context, how can one suggest that there was any benefit to being subjected to this level of dehumanization in the midst of these atrocities?”

DeSantis dismissed Harris’ criticism.
“Anyone reading this and listening to Kamala Harris would know she’s lying,” he said. “This particular skill provision, despite slavery, not because of it.”
The program change was also opposed by Republicans, including Rep. Byron Donald (R-Fla.), who clashed with Team DeSantis over their position.
While Donalds said he supported the “vast majority” of the new standards, he objected to the part “which appeared to single out the skills acquired by slaves as a result of their enslavement”.

Ancient New Jersey Governor chris christi (R), who is one of DeSantis’ rivals in the GOP presidential primary, also criticized DeSantis during the course, saying “that’s not leadership.”
DeSantis is in Iowa Thursday and Friday for a bus tour with his biggest supporting super PAC, Never Back Down. The Iowa caucuses are the first vote of the Primary GOP and are considered very important for DeSantis’ campaign to succeed there in January.
