Trump’s outreach to UAW members
The former president’s visit to Michigan had been anticipated since the United Auto Workers (UAW) union launched a strike against Detroit’s Big Three auto companies, including Ford, General Motors and Stellantis.
However, Trump’s visit to the state comes a day after US President Joe Biden appeared in the state.
Both the current and former president are trying to push their policies amid the strike, aiming to secure the small but significant Union vote in this potential battleground state.
Trump’s relationship with the United Auto Workers (UAW) union is hostile, with the former president known for his opposition to unions.
The former president is less popular within the UAW union because of some of his anti-union approaches when he was president of the United States, including cutting taxes on American companies like auto giants and nominating people at the National Labor Relations Board, which put workers in danger, according to the union.
Trump has frequently criticized UAW President Shawn Fain, arguing that he fails to protect the interests of union members. The former president said: “Autoworkers are being betrayed by their leaders, and their leaders should support Trump. »
Trump also said the UAW union should not support President Biden’s electric vehicle policy, making it non-negotiable.
During his visit, Biden stood alongside UAW President Shawn Fain on picket lines and marched through Belleville. He told union members they deserved a “significant raise.”
In contrast, Trump will likely criticize Biden’s economic policies in his speech, saying he would develop better strategies to protect blue-collar workers if elected president.
Charles Ballard, professor emeritus of economics at Michigan State University, said Michigan and its blue-collar workers are important aspects for both presidential candidates.
President Biden is focused on recognizing the UAW’s efforts and talking about increasing their raises and benefits. Trump, by contrast, focuses primarily on white, working-class voters.
Charles Ballard: “I think he’s going to try to continue to appeal to white, working-class voters, which includes many union members. »
Nonetheless, Shawn Fain’s comments indicate that the UAW opposes Trump’s policies, no matter how hard the former president tried to win the union’s support.
Shawn Fain denounced Trump: “Every fiber of our Union is invested in fighting the billionaire class and an economy that enriches people like Donald Trump at the expense of working people.
He added: “We cannot continue to elect billionaires and millionaires who have no understanding of what it means to live paycheck to paycheck and who are struggling to get by and who expect them to that they solve the problems of the working class. »
Biden gained support from the UAW in the 2020 election. And it appears he will do the same in the next presidential election.
